Oh my goodness that was yummy! I used whole wheat pasta and fresh spinach instead of frozen. I also used the Italian Herb ground turkey breast instead of adding italian seasoning. The only ingredient I excluded was the gree chilies... My mom's allergic. It turned out fantastic! - 6/26/09

This is AWESOME!! I used whole wheat penne pasta and cut up pieces of turkey from one that I roasted. It was a tad spicy, my husband and I liked it, but the kids complained about it. Next time I will cut up the spinach first and use plain diced tomatoes. - 2/2/09

My husband thought it was delicious and said the next day that he had been looking forward to the leftovers all day. Definitely a keeper! I will make this again. - 9/22/08

Overall, this recipe is easy to make, delicious, and nutritious. I do make modifications though. I use whole grain pasta, use plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream, use only parmesan cheese (mozzarella is just too caloric), and add lots sauteed veggies like zucchini, squash, mushrooms, etc. - 8/1/11

    FAQs

Do you cook pasta bake covered or uncovered? ›

Cover lightly with foil, making sure foil is not resting on cheese. Bake 35 minutes. Uncover; bake 10 to 15 minutes longer or until center is bubbly and thoroughly heated. Cool 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

Why do you cover pasta bake with foil? ›

In general, covering a casserole dish will cook the food faster. This is because the lid traps the heat that rises off the food instead of letting it dissipate into the oven. Covering also has the effect of moistening the food inside, like steaming, because any moisture that rises off the food is trapped by the lid.

How do you not overcook baked pasta? ›

Undercook Your Pasta (Really!) To avoid mushy baked pasta, seriously undercook the pasta in its boiling phase. Perry lets the pasta boil for just five minutes before draining it well and tossing it in the sauce.

Should you cook pasta covered or uncovered? ›

Should you cover the pasta when cooking it? It's okay to put a lid on the pot while you are waiting for the water to boil. However, after it starts to boil and you add the pasta to the water, you should remove the lid to prevent the water from bubbling over.

How to stop pasta bake drying out? ›

Make sure you bake it at 350 degrees, use a deep dish and cover it with foil. I always add a lot of sauce and that helps prevent the dried out top layer. Take out of the oven as soon as cheese is melted and golden. It's also important to make sure all pasta is covered with sauce.

Can I cook dry pasta in sauce? ›

By skipping the separate boiling of the pasta and instead adding the dried noodles straight to the sauce, you can make a weeknight-friendly meal in just one pot. Bonus: It makes the pasta more flavorful, too.

Should you rinse pasta before baking? ›

Do Not Rinse. Pasta should never, ever be rinsed for a warm dish. The starch in the water is what helps the sauce adhere to your pasta. The only time you should ever rinse your pasta is when you are going to use it in a cold dish like a pasta salad or when you are not going to use it immediately.

What is the golden rule for cooking pasta? ›

In Italy, the golden rule for cooking pasta is 1, 10, 100 or 1 liter of water, 10 grams of salt for every 100 grams of pasta. Converted for American cooks, the rule should be 1/3, 3, 30, referring to 1/3 oz of salt, 3 oz of pasta and 30 oz of water.

When not to use parchment paper? ›

A basic saying to guide your use of papers in the kitchen: "Sweet treats need parchment sheets; grill or broil, go with foil," says Weaver. Foil conducts and distributes heat, making it able to withstand high temperatures from baking, broiling, roasting, or grilling. For anything above 400 degrees, use foil.

What is the point of a pasta bake? ›

If there's anything more comforting than boiled pasta in a sauce, it's got to be baked pasta in a sauce. The baking adds a crispy crust that is such a delicious contrast to the tender goodness of the dish. The challenge is to how to get the pasta to turn out just right.

Can you cook pasta bake in a metal tray? ›

Metal will react with acidic ingredients like tomatoes, creating off flavors, but glass and ceramic won't, so your baked pasta dishes will turn out wonderfully. So the next time casserole is on the menu, reach for a glass or ceramic baking dish.

Should you boil pasta before pasta bake? ›

Most pasta bake recipes require you to pre-boil your pasta until it's not quite cooked through and then finish it in the oven. But for days when you can't face another pot to wash up or just need something delicious and comforting but minimal effort…well this is the recipe for you!

What is the best pasta shape for pasta bake? ›

Penne is a good choice for baked pasta dishes, it holds up well in the oven and is the perfectly sized mouthful. Try using this pasta in a carbonara pasta bake with meat and vegetables. Rigatoni is a large tube noodle that is wider than penne and cut short and straight.

Is it better to bake covered or uncovered? ›

If you prefer a tender and moist result, covered baking will be the better option. If you're desiring a crispy exterior and bolder flavors, uncovered baking is best.

Should baked ziti be covered when baking? ›

Should I cover Baked Ziti while it's baking? Yes. Cover loosely with foil so it doesn't stick to the cheese, then bake for 20 minutes. Then remove the foil so the cheese can go bubbly and golden!

Should you simmer pasta covered or uncovered? ›

Simmering with the lid on is ideal for dishes that need to cook for a long time or have ingredients that need to absorb liquid. For example, rice, beans, or pasta. It can be handy for cooking meat or vegetables by first searing them and then simmering them in liquid until tender.

Do you bake lasagna covered or open? ›

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake until cheese is golden brown, 5 to 10 more minutes. Remove from the oven and let stand for 10 minutes before cutting and serving.
