WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO MAKE THIS RECIPE FOR RUM EGGNOG

RECIPE FOR RUM EGGNOG (2)

The two main ingredients you’ll need to make this festive holiday co*cktail are, well, rum and eggnog. Let’s discuss them in a little bit more detail down below:

  • Rum: Adds warmth and depth to the co*cktail, complementing the rich and creamy eggnog. I personally like using spiced rum as it has been infused with various spices and has more of a tasty flavour profile. However, your favourite rum or any rum you have on hand, will work in this recipe. Normally, darker rums are traditionally used to make rum and eggnog co*cktails.
  • Eggnog: Why, of course! Eggnog is the star of the show in this recipe for rum eggnog. It has a rich and creamy consistency, making it the perfect base for this holiday co*cktail. You can either make your own eggnog by following my easy recipe or use your favourite store-bought version.
  • Ice Cubes: For chilling the co*cktail – both as you shake it and as you sip it. Ice also helps dilute the drink slightly and contribute to its refreshing quality.
  • Nutmeg (optional, but recommended): A warm and aromatic spice that pairs exceptionally well with the flavours of eggnog. Sprinkling a bit of ground nutmeg on top of this co*cktail not only adds a festive touch but enhances the overall aroma and taste.

HOW TO MAKE SPIKED EGGNOG (KEY TIPS)

RECIPE FOR RUM EGGNOG (4)

You can find full instructions for how to make this classic rum and eggnog in the recipe card down below, but here are a few quick tips to keep in mind:

  • Use fresh and high quality ingredients. Choose a good quality spiced rum and fresh eggnog (bonus points for homemade!) for the best flavour. The better the ingredients, the better your co*cktail will taste. And since there are so few, you’ll really taste each one shining through!
  • Make sure you chill your spiced rum and eggnog properly before making the co*cktail. This helps create a refreshing and well-balanced drink. EXTRA TIP: Serving the co*cktail over ice helps maintain its chill and dilutes it slightly, providing a more balanced and enjoyable drinking experience.
  • Shake well. When shaking the co*cktail, do so vigorously for about 10-15 seconds. This not only mixes the ingredients thoroughly but also helps to achieve a nice frothiness from the eggnog.
  • Strain carefully. Strain the co*cktail into the glass to remove any ice shards or small bits of spice that may not have fully dissolved. Most martini shakers come with a strainer for this purpose. Or, you can use a fine-mesh strainer or a Hawthorne strainer instead, if desired.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS THE RATIO OF EGGNOG TO RUM?

You can adjust the ratio of eggnog to rum in a Rum and Eggnog co*cktail based on personal preference, but a common starting point is 2 parts eggnog to 1 part rum. This ratio provides a good balance between the rich and creamy texture of the eggnog and the spiced flavour of the rum. However, you can certainly tweak the ratio to suit your taste.

Therefore, for a stronger rum flavour, choose a higher ratio of rum to eggnog. For a creamier taste, add more eggnog to the mix.

WHAT RUM IS BEST FOR EGGNOG?

The best rum for eggnog largely depends on personal preference, but spiced rum or dark rum varieties tend to work well. Their rich and complex flavours complement the creamy and spiced nature of eggnog perfectly.

IS CAPTAIN MORGAN GOOD IN EGGNOG?

Yes, Captain Morgan is a popular choice for eggnog and the very rum I used in this recipe for rum and eggnog. Captain Morgan is a spiced rum, meaning it has been infused with various spices, including cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. These spice notes complement the rich and spiced flavours of eggnog quite well, making it an extra flavourful and festive co*cktail combination.

IS EGGNOG WITH RUM SERVED WARM OR COLD?

You can serve eggnog with rum both warm and cold depending on your preference or the mood you’re going for. However, the more traditional way to serve eggnog with rum is serving it cold. You make the cold version by shaking or stirring the ingredients with ice and then straining the mixture into a glass. It’s refreshing and often enjoyed as a chilled holiday treat.

However, some people prefer to serve eggnog warm, especially during colder months. To make a warm version, you can heat the eggnog on the stovetop or in the microwave until it reaches your desired temperature. Then, add the rum and stir. This creates a cozy, comforting beverage reminiscent of a warm holiday drink.
