If there is one thing we've learned from working with students and their families, it's that the financial aid processcan be just as challenging to understand once you’ve applied for it, and that's why we're always here to assist youfor all of your questions and concerns.

Here's a quick overview with information on how to check your financial aid status, submit forms and find details onsome of the finer points of the process.

  • Find your Western Identification Number (WIN)
    1. Please visit goWMU.
    2. Log in with your Bronco NetID and temporary password (found on your admissions letter).
    3. Click "Apps."
    4. Click the "My User Information" tab.
  • Locate financial aid information on goWMU

    Log in to Self-Service and enter your Bronco NetID and Password. From there, you can access Financial AidRequirements and view your Financial Aid Offer.

  • Add Authorized and Proxy Users

    At WMU, we respect the privacy of our students and their families. In an effort to ensure that personal informationis not provided to any unauthorized user as required by federal law, students may choose to set a parent or thirdparty up as an Authorized or Proxy User. Federal laws and regulations require students to authorize individualswhom they wish to have access to their information with the following options:

    1. Authorized Usershaveaccess to billing information. The relationship is managed by Accounts Receivable at (269) 387-4141.
    2. Proxy Usershaveaccess to financial aid and academic information. The relationship is managed by the Registrar's Office at (269)387-4300.

Higher Education Emergency Relief Funding

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act was passed by Congress on March 7, 2020. This bill allotted funds to provide fast anddirect economic aid to the American people negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Funds were allocated to the Office of Postsecondary Educationas the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF). Because of HEERF, Western Michigan University has been able to financially assist studentsthrough these grant funds.

Biden-Harris administration's student debt relief plan

On Aug. 24, 2022, the Biden-Harris administration and the U.S. Department of Education announced a federal student debt cancellation plan.According to the announcement, the U.S. Department of Education will provide up to $20,000 in debt cancellation to Pell Grant recipients with loans held bythe Department of Education and up to $10,000 in debt cancellation to non-Pell Grant recipients.

The U.S. Supreme Court issued a decision blocking the one-time student debt relief plan. Student loan interest resumed on Sept. 1, 2023, with first payments expected in October 2023.

The Federal Student Aid website will update information and will be the source for further announcements.
